Tips From The Trade: Start With A Rug

Today finds me contemplating area rugs and all the amazing, different designs available.  I’m getting ready to start decorating the dining room in our vacation home in Florida.  It’s literally a white box. It seems the possibilities for this room are endless.  This can be a bit daunting…but, having worked with several different professional designers on our home through the years, I’ve picked up some great tips. One of them, is to start with a rug. All the colors and inspiration for a room’s design can be pulled from a really beautiful rug, and, since I’ve no other pieces for this room, a rug seems a good a place to start as any.  What better place to check out some fabulous examples than The Rug Company. So tell me, when designing a fresh new space, where do you start?

I have this thing for fluffy white shag rugs, but they're impossible to clean. So perfect for setting the tone of a room, though!

A large rug is a perfect place to start, but I have wall to wall carpet so my area accent rugs are one of the layers to the finishing touch. I start with the main pieces of furniture like the sofa, and all the basics, then add accessories.

  10. Some great rugs you've showcased here Sue! Sometimes it's so much easier to start with a rug than find one to go with everything you have done.

  11. this is such a good idea to start with the rug! I find it so difficult to fit a rug into a room after all of the other furniture is picked, maybe if i do the rug first I wouldn't find it so hard. Thanks for the tip!

  12. I start with a rug or with the fabric…depending on what has moved me. One of my favorite reps here in Dallas is moving to NY to head up a new showroom for The Rug Co at D&D…..sounds like a dream job. They have such amazing rugs.

  13. That's funny. I always do the rug last, which maybe explains why I have such a hard time finding the perfect rug. I usually start with the furniture. Happy Friday, Sue! xo
