Welcome to week two of the One Room Challenge (see here for week one). Aside from the actual design aspect, a big part of this challenge is knowing how to budget the six weeks, which means a lot of decisions need to be made quickly. I must’ve stood in our laundry room for hours trying to figure out the best way to deal with the deep angles of the walls. Paint or wallpaper?
If paint was the direction, then I wanted to go crazy with new floor tiles (don’t love the current tiles). Crazy patterned walls and floors would be too much together. In the end, based on some outrageous demo/tile quotes I got, I decided to go with wallpaper. Even though most of the wallpaper samples were all a decent size, it was still pretty tough to tell how it was all going to look. Out of the four or five samples I narrowed it down to, I really fell in love withFornasetti’s Nuvolette cloud paper by Cole & Sons.
I’ve loved this paper for a while now, but still wanted to see how it would look on deep angled eaves. I took to the internet and did my best to find images with this paper on crazy walls. Here’s the best of what I found-plus the paper in an actual laundry room designed by Studio M.
Twice before I’ve used patterned paper on challenging angled walls, and loved the results both times. My feeling here is to own the unusual shape and go with it. During last year’s ORC I chose Cole and Son’s Palm Print and years ago I used Cole and Son’s Woods paper in our ski condo bedroom. I’m really hoping for a hat trick this time around with Cole and Sons!
The wallpaper installer has come by to measure and the order has been placed. Decorator’s Best generously offered all ORC participants a great discount.
One of the nice things with Decorator’s Best, a direct to consumer site, is they tell you right up front if the paper‘s in stock (or not)-thankfully it is!
Next up was a relatively easy task. Buying the matching Electrolux dryer to our existing Electrolux washing machine. When we moved in here last year, the existing washer which matched the dryer was closed tight and probably hadn’t been opened in years. If you have one of these front loading machines, then you know you HAVE TO LEAVE THEM OPEN TO AIR OUT. No one had been living in this house for years, we didn’t think to open it during inspection and when we opened it on move in day I literally freaked. It smelled so horrible and was filled with green gunk. There were a few other move in day problems that stressful week, but this one was thankfully easily fixed with a few phone calls. We got a new washer delivered that day and the cesspool situation was carted right out.
The new matching dryer arrived two days ago, it’s a small change but it looks so much better to me. I moved the existing dryer to the basement for now, and I’m looking into donating it to a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. I’ve scheduled a carpenter to come by to give me a quote on building a counter top over the two appliances and possibly adding some cabinet doors onto the open shelves in the room-which would help hide some of the clutter.

Notice how the doors are always open? Don’t love that, but it’s the only way to keep that mildew smell out. Next up I’m looking into some new counter top options (black or white?) and some possible back splashes as well.

You always pick amazing wallpapers! I had no idea you were supposed to leave the front loader washer open. I'm new to this type of machine and no wonder it smells, despite my efforts to often run a wash with just apple cider vinegar. I'm so glad you mentioned this!
