I was first going to give this post the title “calm before the storm”…but truthfully, after reading and listening to all the news and weather updates related to Hurricane Sandy, right now, there is nothing calm about my mood. We’ve secured all the outdoor furniture, potted plants and urns, gassed up the cars, shopped for food, charged up our iEverythings and I’ve now cleaned every surface in the house at least twice. Extreme weather makes me very anxious and I know from my twitter and facebook feeds, I’m not alone. Schools here in the tri-state New York area have already decided to close Monday and Tuesday. It’s probably safe to assume we will not have power, possibly for as long as a week…it’s happened before.
So, if this blog goes silent for a while, chances are we are all hunkering down in the basement, where I’ll most likely be eating my weight in fun-sized Snickers. Our basement is thankfully finished and comfortable. We have a generator that powers the bare minimum, making the house habitable and safe. I’m really just worried about property damage, my kids’ Halloween being ruined (again) and the inconvenience of children home from school with no cable or internet (needed to run my business)…first world problems, all of them, to be sure.
Fingers crossed that this storm either dies down or doesn’t live up to all the hype. Stay safe everyone!

Feel exactly the same Sue!! We finally have a generator on order but didn't arrive in time for Sandy. Not quite sure where we'll be once the power goes but we have neighbors with generators so – stay safe!!

I am quite the opposite, I LOVE extreme weather, skiing in Blizzard, violent storms, extreme heat… since I cannot make it to work and my showroom being closed, I have planned a hike in our woods in the Mianus River Preserve. My husband is more cautious and has water ready, flashlights, generators. We have had our fair share of wind and rain storms in the past few years. My favorite storm was in 1978 where as a student I was snowbound for a week! then we had Gloria when I actually watched my poolhouse being lifted an thrown into the pool! When i was younger, my dad and I would fly in a small Cessna into the heart of a thunderstorm to release dust that would melt ice into water and would save our vinyards from being destroyed by hail. I guess that dare devil spirit stayed with me…Mercifully my husband is much wiser and keeps me out of arms way.

Praying for you to stay safe. Having gone through hurricanes in NC, I can say hoard ice. Also, freeze soda bottles to keep your frozen food from defrosting. You can use them to drink, if need be. We used solar lights from the hardware store. They are easier than candles and flashlights at night. Good luck and best wishes!

Yes, here in NJ we got the call that schools are closed Monday and Tuesday. I am not calm either. After last year's storm and power outage, I am not looking forward to this. Stay safe!

It is an eery quiet now but I am doing my best to use my nervous energy to finish some tasks and stay focused on all that we have.
Let's hope Halloween somehow can go on….for the children's sake.

Guess what… as a Floridian, I have prepared for and been through my share of hurricanes, and I noticed one thing that you do not have ready…. at least not on your list. My advise is to fill all your bathtubs with water, bc if there is no electric for a few days, there might not be water, and then you are not able to flush you-know-what, and that's something you are going to want to do… trust me 🙂
Oh, and run a few loads of laundry.
It's funny about the cleaning… that's usually what I do prior to the hurricanes as well 🙂
