Home again, Home again….

brrrrr

We are back home, from a long stay at our ski condo in Vermont, where we recently rang in the New Year. And, boy was it cold up there!

Last year, my time in Vermont, was completely consumed with fixing our new place up.
This was fine with me, as I would rather be decorating than skiing anyway. Below, are some shots I took of the place “Before”.

The place needed quite a bit of work, and I was a bit overwhelmed at first. Since it’s really a weekend place, that we would presumably only be using in the winter,  I wanted to take some risks (choices that I might not normally make in our regular abode). Even though I was willing to embrace the ski/rustic/lodge theme that (almost) is mandatory for a ski house, I wanted to give it a different spin as well. Luckily, I found some great ideas in a House Beautiful photo, of a Connecticut home, designed by  Healing Barsanti.

Once I spied that black and white Cole and Sons woods wallpaper, I knew I found my design inspiration. First off, it reminded me of the view from our window {two top photos} and, I knew the strange ceiling shape in our bedroom would look great covered with this amazing paper. Below are my “Afters”…

The house is still a work in progress…this year we hope to tackle the kitchen and finish my son’s room.
But at least we got a lot accomplished, and I am glad to have more projects to keep me nice and warm INSIDE.

Just three posts in…

And, I am already veering off my intended theme here (my obsession with decor, design and fashion). I couldn’t resist a Topical Post, the night before Halloween…otherwise known as Mischief Night.

Growing up in the Seventies, my childhood memories have very little in common with my own three young childrens’ current lives. However, every once in a while, I glimpse something so familiar from my past. Yesterday, was one of those times.

The Unicef boxes came home from school in the backpacks. These little orange boxes took me right back to my own trick or treating experiences. This prompted me to try to find a photo online of a Unicef box from the 1970’s. Despite an exhaustive google search, the best image that I could come up with was from Unicef’s own site. It actually looks familiar!

Anyway, its nice to see this Halloween tradition continue with my own children. Needless to say, it also really teaches them so many valuable lessons. Not only does this small gesture raise their global awareness, but it sets a great example of how even young children can get involved and help bring about positive changes in our world.

Last night they scoured the house for spare change. It’s obvious that they are so excited to bring their little orange boxes out with them tomorrow evening for some trick or treating fun.

Happy Halloween!
