That stretch between summer and fall is my favorite time to get dressed. It is still warm, but you can feel the shift coming, and a few of the right pieces can carry you straight through it.

Nothing heavy, nothing you have to wait months to wear.

Here are the ones I am reaching for right now.

transitional pieces summer to fall

1. Nili Lotan Shon Pants

The splurge, and SO worth it. The Shon is a slim cropped trouser that hits exactly right with a loafer, flat and even a short ankle boot. The cropped barrel leg is made for this in-between weather. It’s one of those pieces you reach for far more than the cost-per-wear suggests you will. A real investment, but the kind that earns its place. I can attest to this, as I currently own five pairs now! Size down one or two sizes. Shop them here.

2. The Cardigan

I’ve been on a cardigan shopping tear lately, but for good reason. This is the layer doing the most work in my closet right now. A soft gray cardigan like the one I’m wearing here goes over everything, a tee and jeans, the Shon pants, a summer dress that needs another season. It is warm enough for a cool morning and easy to shrug off by afternoon, which is the whole trick this time of year. Find my exact one here.

and the budget friendly one I would’ve bought had I seen it first~

3. A Great T-Shirt

The quiet workhorse of the whole list. The right one, good fabric, a fit that works, is what everything else goes over. I wear it just the same on its own the second the sun comes out. Least exciting piece on this list but the one I reach for most. Shop my current favorites here.

4. Ballet Flats

The easy shoe that still feels right as things turn cooler. Ballet flats keep an outfit light on the days boots would be too much, and they look pulled together with everything. Comfortable, simple, and always there when you do not know what else to wear. I’m currently eyeing this pair as I love the little heel, and so does my back apparently. Find them here

5. A Light Jacket

The thing you grab on the way out the door once the mornings turn. A light jacket is the most useful layer you can own right now, warm enough for the cool start, easy to carry once the day heats back up. Look for one you can push the sleeves up on and shrug off without a thought. This is the layer that does the most for the least effort. Shop it here

6. A Large Clutch

The bag that makes an everyday outfit look considered and currently the top of my fall wishlist. A large clutch holds more than you would think, your phone, your readers, the everyday pile, but it still feels a little elevated, a little intentional. In a good neutral it works from now straight through the holidays. The kind of piece you reach for when you want to look put together without trying. Find it here

7. Loafers

The shoe that makes fall dressing easy. A loafer gives you real polish while it is still too warm for boots, and it goes with everything, the Shon pants, jeans, trouser, etc. Slip them on and the whole outfit looks finished. Exactly the kind of shoe this season calls for. Shop them here.

8. A Belt With a Turquoise Buckle

The small piece that pulls the whole outfit together, and the one bit of color I am reaching for right now. A turquoise buckle, like the one I have on here, is enough to make a simple outfit look intentional, the white pants and tee, the Shon pants, a tucked-in shirt. It’s truly the easiest way to make the clothes you already own feel a little new. Find it here
