Shoes are the fastest way to tip an outfit toward fall.

Same jeans, same tee, but wear the right pair on your feet and suddenly it reads like a new season.

Here are the ones I’m loving for right now, while it’s still warm but maybe just starting to turn.

The late summer shoe edit

1. The Boat Shoe (or Boat Shoe Mule)

The unexpected one, and the shoe I’m most into right now. The boat shoe is back, and the mule version is even easier! As in all the preppy-with-an-edge look with none of the fuss of laces or a closed heel. It nods to summer while it’s clearly turning fall, which is exactly the point of this whole edit. Wear it with ecru jeans and a loose sweater. Find them here.

2. The Loafer Mule

The shoe I keep slipping on lately. It does the work of a real fall shoe while still feeling open and easy, so you get the polish without closing your feet up in eighty-degree weather. Step in and go. Find them here.

3. A Red or Pink Ballet Flat

The little jolt of color that keeps late-summer dressing from going flat (no pun intended:). A ballet flat in red and pink does all the talking, so the rest of the outfit can stay simple, jeans, a white tee, done. The easiest way to look like you tried without trying. Shop them here.

4. Zebra Flats

My answer to a neutral that isn’t boring. Zebra reads almost like a solid from a few feet away, so it goes with far more than you’d think, but up close it’s the thing that makes the outfit. A print that quietly does a lot. Find them here.

5. A Short Kitten Heel

The little lift that feels right as things turn. A short kitten heel gives you just enough height to feel pulled together, with none of the commitment of a real heel, and it looks as good with the ecru jeans as it does with a dress. Comfortable and a touch polished. Shop them here.

6. A Low-Profile Fashion Sneaker

The sneaker that doesn’t look like a gym shoe. Low and sleek, so it slides under trousers or jeans and keeps the whole thing looking intentional. Reach for these on the days you want to be comfortable but still look put together. Find them here.
