Day Before Thanksgiving Checklist

This “Day Before Thanksgiving Checklist” was originally posted last year-

I thought I’d run it again here today, since we’ll be hosting yet again!

Day Before Thanksgiving Checklist

These tips are still the ones I personally use and still stand by every one of them, regardless of the size of our holiday dinner.

If I ever wrote a book about entertaining, I think it would be called The Anxious Hostess.

Even though this is far from my first time hosting, I still tend to overthink and stress everything I need to do.

Having a list and taking care of as many things as I can – plenty of time ahead of the holiday, really helps me calm down…so does wine;)

Here’s my checklist for the day before Thanksgiving.

This assumes your Thanksgiving menu is already set.

The week before Thanksgiving it’s important to know the number of guests – obviously so you can order your turkey.

This insures you won’t run out of green bean casserole, mashed potatoes or cranberry sauce…can you imagine?

I have a friend who gets so nervous about running out of food, she keeps a frozen turkey on hand…just in case. (She’s never needed it…)

Once all the food is ordered and various side dishes and or desserts have been prepared (or all set to be prepared tomorrow morning) I start to tackle the rest of this list.

Set the table first!

Setting the table and cleaning the house are both “no brainers”-

In fact, if you can delegate the task to your significant other or child, even better!

Here’s a handy chart to help you get the table set right.

You can always come back and make it pretty afterwards:)

Then, I make sure to do the following:

1. Stock up on those handy disposable containers so you can pack up all those fabulous Thanksgiving dinner leftovers.

2. Make sure you have basic items like milk, pretty guest towels, club soda, coffee, tea, etc.

3. Don’t forget the bar and most importantly start making ice now…or plan on buying some.

4. Lay out any serving pieces, champagne/wine glasses and serving platters, especially a nice one to put the turkey on, the night before.

It’s always a good idea to inspect the things you don’t use that often, they might need a bit spiffing and or washing before the big day.

5. Which leads to making sure you have enough dish washing liquid and dish washer detergent, and also liquid hand soap for the powder room.

6. Having plenty of trash bags on hand is also key!

7. Flowers and table decorations like place cards and candles are always a nice touch.

I like to keep things simple with tulips from the supermarket.

When I go to the grocery store, I keep this shopping list handy on my phone.

Those are my tips!

Nothing too crazy, I’d love to hear yours.

Hopefully, all will go well…I’ll be taking Thanksgiving Day off from the blog tomorrow.

However, I’ll be back with a post on the Best of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

So be sure to check back on Friday, as I’ve been working all week on finding the best deals!

Wish me luck and Happy Thanksgiving to YOU!!!

I love this. I am a VERY anxious hostess, even if just family. I have a list by day too! Mine starts 3 days before, and I even incorporate recipe tasks I can do ahead of time to make the day easier. I start on Sunday by giving the dog a bath!
This year, since we are in the middle of Covid and a home renovation, I’m not sweating it. There are piles all over the house with no where to go – I ordered most of it, to be delivered this afternoon. ? Happy Thanksgiving!!!
