Bathroom Ceiling Lighting Ideas Designers Are Loving Right Now

Bathroom lighting is one of those details that can make or break a space.

The right ceiling fixture adds warmth, polish and personality, while the wrong one can leave even a beautiful bathroom feeling flat.

Lately, I’ve been noticing a shift away from overly trendy fixtures and toward lighting which feels softer and more timeless.

Think traditional brass flush mounts, woven textures, vintage inspired glass and fixtures which feel like jewelry for a room.

Glass and Brass Bathroom Ceiling Lights

Pendant lighting allows you to play around with various shapes, colors, sizes, and heights to make an impact on any size bathroom.

Bathroom lighting can and should be decorative too.

Bathroom light fixtures are an easy way to give your bathroom character.

With so many great pendant light options, it’s easy to see why this is one of my favorite bathroom lighting ideas.

Modern Bathroom Ceiling Lighting Ideas

You can use a single pendant light in the center of the ceiling to create a cozy atmosphere, while a set of bathroom pendant lights will add more brightness and maintain a sense of harmony.

While you may want to aim for practical task lighting in your shower and vanity, ambient lightning around your bath and in alcoves can help create a tranquil, luxurious spa-like space in your home.

This will often enhance the overall bathroom design.

Relaxing ambient lighting is perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

Many of today’s bathroom lighting trends even have smart lighting controls you can use to pre-program the settings to your desired color temperature, brightness, and more.

Small Bathroom Lighting Ideas That Still Make a Statement

Good lighting is a great way to make a smaller bathrooms feel more open and spacious.

The best bathroom lighting for small bathrooms obviously won’t take up a lot of space.

Simple pendant lights, space-saving wall sconces and flush mounts, or mirrored cabinets with integral lighting can help any bathroom appear bigger, regardless of the square foot of the space.

You’ll want to make sure you go for an overall cohesive look.

Have you considered using multiple light sources?

If your bathroom is especially dim, try adding vanity lights to the side of the mirror.

You can also illuminate the mirror with task lighting by adding two decorative wall lights on the left and right side of a mirror.

Not only does this look great, but setting up you bathroom lighting fixtures this way will often yield the best lighting results overall.

Whether it’s a rattan flush mount, a woven pendant or subtle raffia detailing, these softer organic textures help to balance out all the hard surfaces bathrooms tend to have.

I especially love this look in coastal homes, powder rooms, and spaces that could use a little extra character without feeling overly trendy.

The key is choosing pieces that still feel polished and timeless rather than overly beachy or theme driven.

Create Drama in Larger Spaces With Your Bathroom Lighting Design

If you have a large bathroom, overhead lights can help bridge the gap between your floors and high ceilings.

Consider your ceiling a blank canvas for different types of lighting.

If you lack natural light and need a more substantial light source, a larger fixture on the ceiling can help link the entire space together and provide adequate light as well.

In addition, a large flush mount ceiling light or pendant can provide a beautiful design focal point in addition to a lot of light.

How to Select the Best Bathroom Ceiling Lighting

It’s a good idea to choose fittings that work with other accessories, colors, and themes in your bathroom.

Details like this matter, so always play close attention when choosing different types of lights.

Also, consider selecting a light bulb color that complements your current aesthetic or the ambiance you’re trying to create.

For example, stark white bright lights can be more practical for getting ready, while warmer light tones create a more tranquil atmosphere.

If you’re undecided, some bathroom fixtures can be adjusted with by adding a high quality dimmer switch.

Meaning you can switch between bright light needed for putting on makeup and softer light to put you in a relaxing mood.

FAQ Section

What type of ceiling light is best for a bathroom? Flush mount and semi flush mount fixtures are usually best choices for bathrooms because they provide plenty of light while still looking polished and stylish.

Are flush mounts still in style? Yes. Today’s flush mount fixtures feel far more elevated that the builder grade versions of the past, especially in brass, glass, woven textures and sculptural shapes.

Can you put a chandelier in a bathroom? Absolutely! A chandelier can look beautiful in a larger bathroom, especially above a soaking tub or in a room with higher ceilings.

What color light is best for bathrooms? Warm lighting tends to feel the most flattering and inviting in bathrooms. I generally prefer bulbs in the 2700K to 3000K range.

How big should a bathroom ceiling light be?Your ceiling light should feel proportional to the size of the room. In smaller bathrooms a compact flush mount works well. While larger bathrooms can handle oversize fixtures or even multiple light sources.
