Benjamin Moore Cape Hatteras Sand
I’m so glad so many of you are finding these blog posts about interior wall paint colors helpful.
I got a lot of great feedback on my last paint color post on Benjamin Moore’s Calm, so I’m back today with another favorite paint choice; Benjamin Moore Cape Hatteras Sand.
If you’re looking for a beautiful neutral wall color in the gray/taupe color family- this could be “the one!”
Our introduction to this Benjamin Moore Cape Hatteras Sand.
We first fell in love with the look of Cape Hatteras Sand in our former home in New York.
This popular color is also known as AC-34, (which stands for America’s Colors)
Named after a string of small island beaches near the outer banks of North Carolina.
This grayish/taupe paint is easily one of my favorite neutral wall paint colors to use.
You can see how pretty this paint color looks in the photo of our sitting room / study above.
As soon as the color went up on just one wall, I knew it was a winner.
This gray neutral paint is SO chic and works perfectly with almost any other color.
I especially love how it looks next to trim painted in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove!

Cape Hatteras Sand paint sample
Second time with this paint color.
Once I find a paint color I love, I tend to use it more than once.
So, choosing to use this Cape Hatteras Sand again in our former living room was a quick and easy decision.
We already knew this color went so well with our white trim work – as a warm, neutral background, I can’t think of a prettier option.

Third time using Benjamin Moore’s Cape Hatteras Sand
Going with this gorgeous paint option again in our living room was a quick and easy choice!
Just like the other paint colors we chose to repeat here in our current home (for example: Farrow and Ball Elephant’s Breath, which you can read about and see here)
The top photo below (taken by Leslie Unruh from our feature on One Kings Lane) shows off this color in our living room perfectly, in my opinion.
I also included a picture I took on my phone the same day!
Conclusion
So there you have it.
Another great color which has stood the test of time (and homes) for us.
Benjamin Moore’s Cape Hatteras Sand is perfect if you’re looking to paint a room a warm gray tone.
Don’t forget, you can always add some white paint to a color, any color really – to get the exact look you want.
I recommend playing around with adding different percentages of white, any hardware or paint store will be very familiar with this practice.
Depending on the light and time of day, this color appears to look light gray and deep gray.

In other words, Benjamin Moore’s Cape Hatteras Sand is a very classic, neutral color.
Ultimately you need to love the paint colors you choose for your home.
Which is why I can’t recommend trying it out as a sample in your home first.
Perhaps this is so obvious, but even the surrounding light from one room to another can differ and therefore change the look of any color.
Live with a few samples for a few days before making your final decision.
Be sure to test the color in natural and artificial light too!
