Are Quartzite and Quartz the same?

For starters, let’s break down the difference between quartzite and quartz counters.

Because they are not the same thing.

Quartzite is a natural stone derived from metamorphic rock.

While, quartz countertops are man made with engineered stone, resin and pigments – an important factor to remember.

Quartz countertops are considered more versatile and durable than quartzite.

The Benefits of Quartzite Countertops

Quartzite countertops are known for being a beautiful option for your kitchen.

A few major reasons to consider Quartzite include:

1. It’s a natural material which can often contribute to higher re-sale value.

2. Quartzite counter tops come in some stunning color variations making them great options.

The drawbacks of Quartzite countertops

Because Quartzite slabs fall into the natural stone countertops category, they can be harder to maintain and more prone to damage.

However, these are usually very beautiful slabs, often with the look of marble.

And, just like a real marble countertop surface, true Quartzite requires extra care and professional sealing every few years.

Additionally, Quartzite can be quite expensive.

Which is why low maintenance quartz is such a popular choice these days.

The Benefits of Granite Countertops

First off, many of you are wondering if granite countertops are no longer in style.

The answer is yes and no…

While the color choices have moved on from the 1990s, granite still is a great choice for homeowners these days.

So, if you’re considering granite, opt for a more solid color way.

Personally, I think the look of black granite is timeless!

There are many additional benefits to granite countertops:

Granite tends to be more affordable, depending on the type you choose.

2. It’s such a durable, hard material – it really resists scratches and chips which comes with everyday use.

3. Granite is also heat resistant and stain resistant – so feel free to put your heavy objects and hot pot of red sauce right on it.

4. Finally, day to day granite requires very little maintenance.

The Cons of Granite countertop

1. Proper sealing is highly recommended.

2. You do need to seal your granite every year or so – so it’s not a zero maintenance material.

3. It’s not as strong as some other materials like natural quartz, so if you’re not careful a hot pan can crack or chip your counters.

4. Granite slabs can be quite heavy and may require extra support underneath.

Natural Stone Materials Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Mohs Scale of hardness?

One of the most important tests for identifying mineral specimens is the Mohs Hardness Test.

This test compares the resistance of a mineral to being scratched by ten reference minerals known as the Mohs Hardness Scale.

This test is useful because most specimens of a given mineral are very close to the same hardness.

This makes hardness a reliable diagnostic property for most minerals.

While this test is often referenced with popular materials for countertops, the good news is you don’t really need to worry about the subtle differences in the hardness of the stone you choose for your home’s counter tops.

This is because most home buyers are mainly concerned with just the ease of maintenance and cost.
